Overview

Insulin glargine is a long-acting synthetic form of human insulin used to manage blood glucose levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is administered as a subcutaneous injection once daily and provides a steady basal level of insulin for approximately 24 hours or longer. Insulin glargine works by replacing or supplementing the body's natural insulin to facilitate the uptake of glucose into tissues and inhibit hepatic glucose production. In type 1 diabetes, it must be used alongside short-acting insulins; in type 2 diabetes, it can be used alone or with other antidiabetic medications. The drug was originally developed by Sanofi and is available under several brand names including Lantus (the original product), Basaglar, Toujeo, Semglee (a biosimilar), and Rezvoglar.
