Overview

Insulin glargine + insulin glulisine is a combination of two synthetic human insulins used to manage blood glucose in people with diabetes mellitus. Insulin glargine is a long-acting (basal) insulin analog that provides steady, prolonged glucose-lowering activity, typically administered once daily to maintain baseline glycemic control[1][3][4][6]. Insulin glulisine is a rapid-acting (prandial) insulin analog designed for use at mealtimes to quickly reduce postprandial blood sugar spikes; it begins working within 15 minutes, peaks at about 1 hour, and lasts for 2–4 hours[2][5][6]. Both agents act by mimicking endogenous human insulin: they promote cellular uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into tissues such as muscle and fat and inhibit hepatic glucose production. This combination regimen is commonly used in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes when intensive glycemic management with multiple daily injections or an external pump is required[7]. The primary indication for this combination therapy is the treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.
