Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Inhaled human insulin (specifically the NN1998 program) is a liquid aerosol formulation of human insulin developed by Novo Nordisk in collaboration with Aradigm Corporation. It was designed for mealtime (preprandial) administration using the AERx insulin Diabetes Management System (AERx iDMS), an electronic inhaler that ensures precise and reproducible delivery to the deep lung. As an insulin receptor agonist, it mimics the action of endogenous insulin to manage glycemic levels in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Although the program reached Phase III clinical trials and demonstrated pharmacokinetic profiles comparable to subcutaneous injections, Novo Nordisk discontinued its development in 2008. This decision was primarily driven by the commercial failure of Pfizer's inhaled insulin product, Exubera, rather than safety or efficacy concerns.
