Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Topical insulin (specifically the investigational formulation EYED-002) is a sterile, preservative-free ophthalmic suspension of human insulin being evaluated for its neuroprotective potential in patients with open-angle glaucoma. While insulin is traditionally used systemically for glycemic control in diabetes, it also functions as a potent survival factor in the central nervous system, including the retina. In glaucoma, the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) leads to irreversible vision loss; topical insulin is hypothesized to bind to insulin receptors on these cells, activating intracellular signaling pathways that promote cell survival and potentially stimulate the regeneration of dendrites. Developed by researchers at Stanford University, this localized delivery method aims to provide therapeutic concentrations to the retina while minimizing systemic absorption and associated side effects.
