Overview
insulin in dextran matrix is an investigational oral insulin formulation developed by Bows Pharmaceuticals AG for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The drug consists of human insulin encapsulated within a proprietary dextran-based matrix, which is designed to protect the protein from enzymatic degradation in the stomach and upper gastrointestinal tract. This delivery system facilitates insulin absorption in the small intestine, allowing the hormone to enter the portal circulation and mimic the natural first-pass effect through the liver, potentially offering a more physiological distribution compared to subcutaneous injections. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and ability to lower post-prandial blood glucose levels.
