Overview

Insulin isophane, also known as neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) insulin, is an intermediate-acting form of human insulin used to control blood sugar in people with diabetes mellitus. It works by increasing the amount of circulating insulin, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. The onset of action typically occurs within 2 to 4 hours after injection, peaks at 4 to 12 hours, and lasts for about 12 to 18 hours. Insulin isophane helps facilitate the uptake of glucose into cells for energy and storage and compensates for insufficient endogenous production or utilization in diabetic patients. It may be used alone or in combination with other insulins or oral antidiabetic agents[1][2][3][7].
