Overview

**Insulin isophane + insulin glulisine** is a combination of two insulins used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. **Insulin isophane** (also known as NPH insulin) is an intermediate-acting human insulin that forms a depot at the injection site, releasing insulin slowly to provide basal glycemic control. **Insulin glulisine** is a rapid-acting insulin analog that is quickly absorbed after subcutaneous injection and is used to control postprandial blood glucose spikes. When combined, this regimen covers both basal and prandial insulin needs, potentially improving glycemic control over traditional combinations such as isophane with regular insulin. The mechanism of action for both components is to lower blood glucose by facilitating cellular uptake of glucose and inhibiting hepatic glucose output. This combination is not commercially available as a fixed premix, but clinical trials have investigated its efficacy when given as separate injections as part of a basal-bolus insulin regimen[2][5].
