Overview

Lente insulin (insulin zinc suspension) is an intermediate-acting form of insulin that was historically used to manage blood glucose levels in diabetes mellitus. It consists of a mixture of amorphous and crystalline forms of either bovine or porcine-derived insulin complexed with zinc to slow absorption and prolong its action. The onset is 1–2 hours after injection, with peak effects at 8–12 hours and duration up to 24 hours. Originally developed by Novo Nordisk in the early 1950s for human use, it was later discontinued for humans due to the advent of more predictable recombinant insulins but remains approved for veterinary use (notably as Vetsulin/Vetpen). Its mechanism involves acting as an agonist at the insulin receptor, promoting cellular uptake of glucose and regulating carbohydrate metabolism[1][2][3][8].
