Insulin lispro is a rapid/fast–acting recombinant human insulin analog used to control hyperglycemia in people with diabetes mellitus, including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is typically administered subcutaneously by injection or via an insulin pump. Insulin lispro differs from regular human insulin by the reversal of two amino acids at positions B28 and B29, which reduces self-association and allows for faster absorption after injection. Its onset of action occurs within about 15–30 minutes, peaks at around 30–90 minutes, and lasts up to five hours. The drug works by binding to the insulin receptor on target tissues (such as muscle and fat), promoting glucose uptake from the blood into cells while inhibiting hepatic glucose production[2][3][4]. Insulin lispro was first approved in 1996 and is produced using recombinant DNA technology in Escherichia coli[3][4].
