Overview

Insulin ODF is an experimental buccal delivery system for insulin developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It utilizes a dual-layered polymeric film designed to adhere to the buccal mucosa (inner cheek). The film consists of an adhesive layer containing insulin and a backing layer that facilitates unidirectional absorption into the systemic circulation as the film dissolves. This delivery method aims to provide a non-invasive alternative to subcutaneous insulin injections by bypassing the digestive system. A Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT01446120) has evaluated its pharmacokinetics and safety compared to commercial NPH insulin.
