Overview

Biocon's Insulin-R is a short-acting, prandial recombinant human insulin produced using a yeast-based (Pichia pastoris) expression system. Developed by Biocon Biologics, it is a proposed biosimilar to Eli Lilly's Humulin R. The drug functions as an agonist at the insulin receptor, mimicking the action of endogenous insulin to regulate glucose metabolism by promoting peripheral glucose uptake and inhibiting hepatic glucose production. It is intended for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in both adult and pediatric populations. Clinical equivalence in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics was demonstrated in the RHINE-1 study using the euglycaemic clamp technique, showing that Insulin-R is comparable to the reference product in healthy subjects.
