Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Insulinova is a cell therapy being developed by Avaí Bio in a joint venture with SGAustria for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes and insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes. The therapy utilizes SGAustria's proprietary Cell-in-a-Box® technology to encapsulate genetically modified insulin-producing cells. These encapsulated cells act as a "bio-artificial pancreas," secreting insulin in response to glucose levels to supplement or replace endogenous insulin production. The semi-permeable microcapsules protect the therapeutic cells from immune system rejection, potentially eliminating the need for immunosuppressive drugs, while allowing for the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and glucose. The program is currently in preclinical development.
