Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pathogen-reduced platelet concentrates are biological blood products treated with the INTERCEPT Blood System to enhance transfusion safety. The process involves the addition of amotosalen (a photoactive compound) to platelet units, followed by illumination with ultraviolet A (UV-A) light. This treatment induces permanent covalent cross-linking of nucleic acids, effectively inactivating a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria, and parasites, as well as residual donor white blood cells, thereby preventing transfusion-transmitted infections and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease. In the EFFIPAP trial, sponsored by the Etablissement Français du Sang, these platelets were evaluated for hemostatic efficacy in patients with thrombocytopenia resulting from bone marrow aplasia or malignant hematologic diseases.
