Overview
INTERCEPT Plasma for Ebola virus disease is a pathogen-inactivated convalescent plasma therapy developed by Cerus Corporation. It is a medical device/biologic combination product that utilizes the INTERCEPT Blood System technology to treat convalescent plasma collected from Ebola survivors. The system employs a proprietary molecule (amotosalen) activated by ultraviolet (UVA) light to bind and cross-link DNA and RNA in the plasma, thereby inactivating potential pathogens (including Ebola virus, bacteria, and other transfusion-transmitted infections) while preserving therapeutic antibodies. The treated plasma is then transfused into patients with acute Ebola infections to provide passive immunity.
