**INTERCEPT RBCs** are red blood cell components treated ex vivo with the INTERCEPT Blood System for Red Blood Cells, a pathogen reduction technology developed to improve the safety of transfused RBCs by inactivating a broad spectrum of viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens while maintaining red cell functionality. This system utilizes a combination of amustaline (S-303) and glutathione (GSH) to irreversibly crosslink pathogen nucleic acids and prevent their replication, thereby reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections. This technology is intended for use in patients requiring transfusion support for acute and chronic anemia, such as those undergoing complex cardiac surgery or with sickle cell disease. The system is being evaluated in pivotal Phase 3 clinical trials comparing its efficacy and safety to conventional RBCs, with its primary development led by Cerus Corporation.
