Overview

Interferon alfa is a pharmaceutical drug composed of natural or recombinant forms of human interferon alpha (IFN-α), a type I interferon protein produced by leukocytes. It acts as an immunomodulator and antiviral agent by stimulating the innate immune response and enhancing the activity of immune cells against viruses and tumor cells. Interferon alfa is used to treat various conditions including chronic hepatitis B and C infections, hairy cell leukemia, malignant melanoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Kaposi's sarcoma (AIDS-related), follicular lymphoma, Behçet's disease, multiple myeloma, carcinoid tumor, mastocytosis and genital warts. The drug can be derived from human blood or produced using recombinant DNA technology in bacteria such as E. coli[2][3][4][5][7]. It is typically administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.
