Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Recombinant human interferon-alpha2 (IFN-α2) is a type I interferon cytokine that plays a critical role in the innate immune response against viral infections and malignancies. It binds to the heterodimeric interferon-alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), consisting of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits, to activate the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This signaling cascade induces the transcription of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that mediate antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects. Historically developed as approved therapeutics such as interferon alfa-2a and interferon alfa-2b for indications like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hairy cell leukemia, and melanoma, recombinant human interferon-alpha2 is also being engineered by Heligenics. Utilizing its proprietary GigaAssay™ functional genomics platform, Heligenics is developing libraries of thousands of recombinant human interferon-alpha2 variants (including precision post-translationally modified and disulfide-bond-engineered variants) to optimize therapeutic efficacy and safety for diseases such as acute myeloid leukemia, squamous cell carcinoma, polycythemia vera, hepatitis D, and other viral infections.
