Overview

Interferon alfa‑2a is a recombinant form of human interferon alpha, a type I interferon consisting of 165 amino acids. It is produced using recombinant DNA technology and closely resembles the naturally occurring leukocyte-derived interferons. Interferon alfa‑2a acts as an immunomodulator and antiviral agent by stimulating the innate immune response, inhibiting viral replication, and modulating cell growth. It is approved for use in treating chronic hepatitis B and C infections, Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), hairy cell leukemia, AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, malignant melanoma, condylomata acuminata (genital warts), lymphoma, and renal cell carcinoma[1][3][5][7]. Its mechanism involves binding to specific cell surface receptors to activate intracellular signaling pathways that enhance immune responses against viruses and tumor cells.
