**Interferon alfa-2a** is a recombinant, non-glycosylated human type I interferon cytokine produced in *Escherichia coli*. It binds the interferon-alpha/beta receptor subunits IFNAR1 and IFNAR2, activating JAK-STAT-mediated transcriptional programs with antiviral, antiproliferative, immunomodulatory, and antitumor effects. In Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group study E6296, it was administered subcutaneously at 9 million units three times weekly as one component of the FHIG co-administration regimen with fluorouracil, hydroxyurea, and filgrastim for advanced gastric cancer.
