Overview

Interferon alfa-2b is a recombinant form of human type I interferon produced using recombinant DNA technology. It is classified as an immunomodulator and cytokine with antiviral, antitumor, antiparasitic, and immunomodulatory activities. Interferon alfa-2b exerts its effects primarily by binding to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This leads to increased expression of genes involved in antiviral defense and immune modulation. The drug is used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C infections, hairy cell leukemia, follicular lymphoma, malignant melanoma (especially after surgical removal), AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, and genital warts. It may be used alone or in combination with other agents such as ribavirin for hepatitis C. Merck developed and manufactures this drug.
