Interferon alfa-2c is a recombinant type I interferon, specifically an alpha subtype, used as an immunomodulatory and antiviral agent. Like other type I interferons, it exerts its effects by binding to the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), which consists of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits expressed on most cell types. Upon receptor engagement, it activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway—specifically Janus kinases (JAK1 and TYK2)—leading to phosphorylation of STAT1 and STAT2 transcription factors. These form a complex with IRF9 called ISGF3 that translocates to the nucleus to induce expression of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). The resulting proteins inhibit viral replication, enhance immune surveillance against tumors, and modulate cellular proliferation[6]. Interferon alfa-2c has been investigated for use in various viral infections (such as hepatitis B and C) and certain cancers[1].
