Interferon alfa-5 is one of the naturally occurring subtypes of human interferon alpha (IFN-α), a type I interferon cytokine involved in the innate immune response to viral infections. Interferons are produced by leukocytes and play a key role in antiviral defense, immunomodulation, and inhibition of cell proliferation. While pharmaceutical products such as "interferon alfa" or "Multiferon" contain mixtures of several IFN-α subtypes (including but not limited to IFNA1, IFNA2, and others), specific information on clinical use or commercial availability for the isolated subtype "interferon alfa-5" is not available. The mechanism of action for all type I interferons involves binding to the interferon alpha/beta receptor complex (IFNAR1/IFNAR2) on cell surfaces, leading to activation of intracellular signaling pathways that upregulate antiviral proteins and modulate immune responses[1][2]. There is no evidence that pure recombinant or natural "interferon alfa-5" alone has been developed as an approved drug; it may be present as a component in multi-subtype preparations.
