interferon alfa-8

Interferon alfa-8 is a type I interferon belonging to the interferon alpha subfamily, a group of naturally occurring proteins with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory activities. Like other interferon alphas, interferon alfa-8 binds to the type I interferon receptor, leading to the activation of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, transcription of interferon-stimulated genes, and downstream effects including inhibition of viral replication, modulation of immune cell activity, and potential anti-tumor effects. Interferon alfa-8 is a recombinant or naturally occurring human protein, but it is not a widely used or commercially available pharmaceutical product like interferon alfa-2a or interferon alfa-2b. Its principal role is as a cytokine and in basic research settings.
