Interferon alfa-n1 is a purified, natural mixture of human alpha interferons (type I), at least two of which are glycosylated. Unlike recombinant forms, it is derived from human sources and contains multiple subtypes. It acts as an immunomodulator and biological response modifier by binding to the type I interferon receptor complex (IFNAR1/IFNAR2), activating associated Janus kinases (JAK1 and TYK2). This leads to phosphorylation of STAT transcription factors and induction of genes involved in antiviral defense, immune modulation, and antitumor activity. Interferon alfa-n1 has been used primarily for the treatment of genital warts due to human papillomavirus infection, hairy cell leukemia, chronic hepatitis B or C in well-compensated adults, juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis, and as an adjuvant in certain cancers[1][3][5][6][8]. The drug was originally developed by Glaxo Wellcome.
