Interferon alpha-14 (IFN-α14) is a specific subtype of the Type I interferon family, a group of cytokines essential for the innate immune response against viral infections and malignancies. Encoded by the *IFNA14* gene, this protein signals through the heterodimeric Type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), composed of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits. Binding to this receptor activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to the nuclear translocation of transcription factors that induce the expression of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). IFN-α14 is distinguished by its high biological potency; research has demonstrated that it possesses significantly greater antiviral activity against HIV-1 compared to the more commonly utilized IFN-α2 subtype, effectively inhibiting viral replication and inducing potent restriction factors in various cell types. While not currently marketed as a standalone recombinant pharmaceutical product, it is a naturally occurring constituent of multi-subtype human leukocyte interferon preparations, such as Multiferon, which are used therapeutically for viral and neoplastic conditions.
