Overview

Interferon alpha-2a (Azidus Brasil) is a recombinant Type I interferon developed by Blausiegel (with clinical trials managed by Azidus Brasil) as a biosimilar version of Roche's Roferon A. It is a cytokine that binds to the interferon-alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR) complex, initiating a signaling cascade via the JAK-STAT pathway. This results in the induction of various interferon-stimulated genes that exert antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects. In the context of Hepatitis C, it inhibits viral replication and enhances the host immune response against the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The drug was evaluated in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies in Brazil to demonstrate bioequivalence to the reference product, Roferon A.
