Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of three agents: - **Interferon alpha-2b** is a recombinant cytokine in the type I interferon family, acting primarily through binding to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR1/2), leading to activation of antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory pathways. - **Ribavirin** is a nucleoside analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity. It inhibits viral RNA synthesis and mRNA capping, thereby impeding viral replication. - **Interferon-gamma** is a type II interferon that binds to the interferon gamma receptor (IFNGR1/2), activating macrophages and enhancing antigen presentation as well as cell-mediated immune responses. The combination aims to leverage synergistic antiviral effects by stimulating both innate and adaptive immune responses while directly inhibiting viral replication. This regimen has been investigated for enhanced efficacy in chronic hepatitis C virus infection compared to dual therapy with just interferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin[1][7]. Additionally, combinations of IFN-alpha 2b and IFN-gamma have shown promise in other viral infections such as COVID-19 due to their complementary immunomodulatory actions[5].
