Interferon alpha-9 is a specific subtype of the type I interferon alpha proteins, classified as IFNA9, and is part of the broader interferon alpha family, which includes at least 13 related proteins produced by leukocytes. Interferon alpha proteins, including alpha-9, are cytokines involved in the innate immune response, with roles in antiviral defense, tumor suppression, and immunomodulation.
