Overview

Interferon alpha-9 is a specific subtype of the type I interferon alpha proteins, classified as IFNA9, and is part of the broader interferon alpha family, which includes at least 13 related proteins produced by leukocytes. Interferon alpha proteins, including alpha-9, are cytokines involved in the innate immune response, with roles in antiviral defense, tumor suppression, and immunomodulation. While various recombinant and natural mixtures of interferon alpha subtypes (e.g., interferon alpha-2a, alpha-2b) are approved for clinical use, there is currently **no evidence of a purified, recombinant, or pharmaceutical preparation marketed specifically as "interferon alpha-9"** for human therapy. Instead, "interferon alpha-9" is used primarily as a research reagent to study subtype-specific interferon biology and has demonstrated antiviral and immunoregulatory activities in experimental systems. The broader mechanism of action for interferon alpha subtypes, including alpha-9, involves binding to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR1/IFNAR2), activating JAK-STAT signaling, upregulating MHC expression, and inducing antiviral proteins.
