Interferon alpha D is a specific subtype of human interferon alpha proteins, classified as a cytokine within the type I interferon family. Interferons function as naturally occurring proteins with antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative properties. Interferon alpha D, like other type I alpha interferons, binds to the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and inducing the expression of numerous interferon-stimulated genes. These genes exert diverse biological activities, including inhibition of viral replication, enhancement of immune cell cytotoxicity, and modulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. The majority of clinical use and data relate to recombinant interferon alpha 2 subtypes (such as alfa-2a and alfa-2b); however, interferon alpha D is recognized as a natural human subtype with similar molecular and functional profiles as other alpha interferons[2][3][5].
