Overview

Interferon-alpha2a is a recombinant human biologic (protein therapeutic) that functions as a cytokine with potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. It is being investigated by University Hospital Tuebingen for the treatment of Behcet's disease, specifically targeting severe ocular manifestations such as sight-threatening posterior uveitis and retinal vasculitis. The drug works by binding to the Type I interferon receptor complex, thereby modulating immune responses and suppressing inflammatory pathways. In clinical studies, including the Phase III INCYTOB trial, interferon-alpha2a demonstrated high response rates and the ability to induce complete remission of ocular vasculitis, while also showing efficacy for extraocular symptoms like genital ulcerations and arthritis.
