Interferon beta + atorvastatin is a combination therapy investigated primarily for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). Interferon beta is an immunomodulatory cytokine that reduces inflammation and modulates immune responses, commonly used as a first-line disease-modifying therapy in MS. Atorvastatin, a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor, is primarily used to lower cholesterol but also exhibits immunomodulatory properties. The rationale for combining these agents lies in their potential synergistic effects on immune modulation and inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are implicated in MS pathogenesis by facilitating leukocyte migration and blood-brain barrier disruption. Clinical studies have evaluated this combination to determine if atorvastatin adds benefit to interferon beta therapy; however, results have been mixed regarding efficacy and safety[1][2][5].
