Interferon beta-1a + riluzole is a combination therapy that has been investigated for the treatment of early multiple sclerosis (MS). This combination pairs interferon beta-1a, an immunomodulator that works by decreasing inflammation and preventing nerve damage in MS, with riluzole, a glutamate modulator with potential neuroprotective properties. In clinical trials, this combination was studied to determine if riluzole could provide additional neuroprotective benefits when added to standard interferon beta-1a therapy in early MS patients. A randomized controlled phase II trial evaluated this combination but found that riluzole treatment did not meaningfully reduce brain atrophy progression when added to weekly intramuscular interferon beta-1a in early MS patients.
