Interferon beta-1b is a recombinant protein belonging to the type I interferon family, used as an immunomodulatory therapy for multiple sclerosis (MS). It is indicated for adults with relapsing forms of MS, including clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. The drug works by modulating immune responses—balancing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory agents in the central nervous system, reducing inflammatory cell migration across the blood-brain barrier, and decreasing neuronal inflammation. Interferon beta also upregulates MHC I expression to enhance cytotoxic T lymphocyte activity and induces antiviral mediators such as 2'-5' oligoadenylate synthetase. This results in reduced frequency of MS relapses and may slow progression of disability[1][2][3][4][9].
