Interferon gamma-1a is a recombinant form of interferon gamma, a type II cytokine. Interferon gamma is a crucial cytokine involved in both innate and adaptive immunity, playing a significant role in antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative activities. It functions by binding to the interferon-gamma receptor (IFNGR) on target cells, which then activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. This activation leads to various cellular effects, including the stimulation of innate immune cell development, recruitment, and activation, enhancement of effector T cell functions, activation of macrophages, increased antigen presentation, and direct suppression of tumor cell proliferation and promotion of apoptosis. In research settings, interferon gamma-1a has been shown to increase the antitumor activity of mitomycin C against human colon cancer cells, partly by increasing the intracellular uptake of mitomycin C.
