Interferon gamma-1b + sargramostim is a combination of two recombinant cytokine biologics being investigated as an adjuvant immunotherapy for pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and other nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung infections. Interferon gamma-1b (brand name Actimmune) is a recombinant form of interferon gamma that activates macrophages through the interferon-gamma receptor, enhancing their bactericidal activity and ability to clear intracellular pathogens. Sargramostim (brand name Leukine) is a recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) that stimulates the production, differentiation, and activation of macrophages and other myeloid cells via the GM-CSF receptor. The combination is designed to address immune dysregulation in patients with chronic NTM infections by boosting macrophage-mediated clearance of the bacteria, particularly in cases where standard multi-drug antibiotic therapy has failed.
