Interferon-gamma mRNA is an mRNA-based therapeutic designed to induce the local production of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) protein within the tumor microenvironment. Delivered typically via lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the mRNA is translated by the patient's own cells into functional IFN-γ, a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine. IFN-γ plays a critical role in coordinating innate and adaptive immune responses by enhancing antigen presentation through MHC class I and II upregulation, activating natural killer (NK) cells and macrophages, and promoting the differentiation of T-helper 1 (Th1) cells. This approach aims to overcome the systemic toxicity associated with recombinant IFN-γ protein administration by providing localized, sustained expression of the cytokine directly at the site of the malignancy.
