Interferon gamma-primed mesenchymal stromal cells (γMSCs) are an experimental cell-based therapy developed by Emory University for the treatment of moderate-to-severe persistent asthma. The therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells that have been pre-treated (primed) with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) to enhance their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory potency. This priming process is intended to increase the cells' ability to suppress inflammatory responses and reduce airway hyperreactivity compared to unprimed mesenchymal stromal cells. The treatment is administered as a single intravenous infusion and is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT05035862) to assess safety, toxicity, and potential mechanisms of action in young adults with childhood-diagnosed asthma.
