Interleukin 1 beta + interferon gamma is a combination of two recombinant cytokines—interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ)—used experimentally in research settings to study their synergistic or additive effects on immune modulation, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammation. Both are pro-inflammatory cytokines with distinct but overlapping roles in immune regulation. In vitro and animal studies have shown that the combination can induce nitric oxide synthase expression leading to increased nitric oxide production, which mediates cellular damage such as pancreatic β-cell dysfunction relevant to type 1 diabetes[2][6]. The combination has also been studied for its effects on Schwann cells (apoptosis/proliferation), astrocyte/microglial activation after brain injury[4], and anti-tumor activity by inhibiting tumor cell proliferation and invasiveness[8]. There is no evidence this specific combination is approved or marketed as a pharmaceutical product; it is primarily used as an experimental tool in immunology and pathophysiology research.
