This experimental cancer vaccine therapy, developed by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, is designed for children with relapsed or refractory neuroblastoma. The treatment involves harvesting neuroblastoma tumor cells—either from the patient (autologous) or from a standardized cell line (allogeneic)—and genetically modifying them using retroviral or adenoviral vectors to secrete interleukin-2 (IL-2). These modified cells are then administered subcutaneously to function as an immunostimulatory vaccine. The secreted IL-2 is intended to enhance the patient's immune response, specifically by activating cytotoxic T lymphocytes to recognize and destroy neuroblastoma cells throughout the body. Phase I clinical trials have evaluated the safety and efficacy of this cellular immunotherapy in inducing systemic immunity against neuroblastoma tumor-associated antigens.
