An interleukin-2 receptor monoclonal antibody (IL-2R mAb) is a class of targeted biologic agents designed to bind to the interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R), specifically the alpha subunit (CD25) expressed on activated T lymphocytes. By blocking the binding of IL-2 to its receptor, these monoclonal antibodies selectively inhibit IL-2-mediated T-cell activation and clonal proliferation, which are critical pathways in transplant rejection and certain autoimmune processes. Clinically, agents in this class, such as basiliximab and daclizumab, have been utilized as induction therapy to prevent acute organ rejection in kidney transplant recipients, often in combination with other immunosuppressive regimens containing tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, and corticosteroids.
