**Interleukin-21 mRNA** is a nonproprietary, target-specific mRNA therapeutic platform descriptor rather than the name of one uniquely identifiable drug product. It refers to messenger RNA engineered to express the cytokine interleukin-21 after cellular uptake and translation. The resulting IL-21 protein activates the interleukin-21 receptor complex, which includes IL-21 receptor and the common gamma-chain receptor subunit, to stimulate immune-cell activity, including T-cell and natural-killer-cell responses. This approach is principally being explored as localized cancer immunotherapy, often using lipid nanoparticle delivery; however, a published intratumoral LNP program encoded IL-21 together with IL-7 and 4-1BB ligand, and therefore is not the same as a standalone IL-21 mRNA drug.
