Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is a T-helper type 2 (Th2) cell-derived cytokine that plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of allergic bronchial asthma. It mediates the terminal differentiation of committed eosinophil precursors, activates mature eosinophils, and prolongs their survival. IL-5 also selectively enhances eosinophil degranulation, antibody-dependent cytotoxicity, and adhesion to vascular endothelium. Studies have shown that recombinant human IL-5 can induce eosinophil infiltration into asthmatic airways and increase airway hyperresponsiveness. It is considered a potential therapeutic target for asthma.
