Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Intersol (also known as PAS-C) is a sterile, non-pyrogenic isotonic additive solution used for the processing and storage of apheresis platelets. It is designed to replace approximately 65% to 70% of the plasma in platelet concentrates, which serves to reduce the incidence of plasma-associated transfusion reactions, such as allergic and febrile non-hemolytic reactions. The solution is composed of sodium citrate, sodium phosphate, and sodium chloride. Sodium citrate acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions, thereby inhibiting the coagulation cascade during storage. In the EFFIPAP clinical trial (NCT00158678) sponsored by the Etablissement Français du Sang (EFS), platelets suspended in Intersol were utilized as the standard-of-care reference arm to evaluate the hemostatic efficacy and safety of pathogen-reduced platelets in patients with thrombocytopenia secondary to bone marrow aplasia.
