Intestinal Jiling Granules

Intestinal Jiling Granules (Changjiling) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation developed by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine) specifically for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). The preparation is a modified version of the classic 'Tongxie Yaofang' formula, designed to tonify the spleen, soften the liver, and relieve diarrhea. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the brain-gut axis, primarily through the reduction of serotonin (5-HT) levels in the intestinal mucosa and serum, which helps to alleviate visceral hypersensitivity and gastrointestinal dysmotility. Furthermore, research indicates that the granules enhance the intestinal mucosal barrier by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins such as Occludin and Claudin-1, and may also exert therapeutic effects by regulating gut microbiota composition. It is currently used as a hospital preparation in China and has been the subject of multiple clinical trials evaluating its efficacy in improving abdominal pain and stool consistency.
