Overview

Intestinal microbiota transplantation (IMT), also known as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), is an investigational biologic therapy being developed by Zhongshan Hospital Xiamen University for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The intervention involves the transfer of viable commensal gut bacteria from healthy donor fecal samples to patients with CHB, typically those already receiving long-term antiviral therapy. The therapeutic rationale is based on the gut-liver axis, where restoring gut microbiota balance (correcting dysbiosis) is hypothesized to modulate the host's immune response, potentially leading to HBeAg clearance and seroconversion. Clinical studies evaluate the efficacy of IMT as an adjunct to standard antiviral agents to improve virological outcomes.
