Intralipid is an intravenous fat emulsion composed primarily of soybean oil, egg phospholipids, and glycerin, providing essential fatty acids and calories. Dextrose is a form of glucose that serves as a carbohydrate energy source. When combined, these components supply both lipids and carbohydrates intravenously to patients who cannot receive adequate nutrition orally or enterally. This combination supports caloric intake, prevents essential fatty acid deficiency (EFAD), and maintains metabolic needs during periods when oral or enteral feeding is not possible or sufficient[1][2][3][5]. The mechanism involves direct provision of macronutrients for cellular metabolism: Intralipid supplies triglycerides metabolized for energy and structural needs; dextrose provides immediate glucose for cellular respiration.
