Intralipid + heparin is a combination of two intravenous agents used together primarily in research and specialized clinical settings. Intralipid is an intravenous fat emulsion composed mainly of soybean oil, egg phospholipids, and glycerin, used to provide calories and essential fatty acids to patients requiring parenteral nutrition[8]. Heparin is an anticoagulant that prevents blood clot formation by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, thereby inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa[1][4][5]. When administered together as an infusion (often referred to as "Intralipid/heparin infusion"), this combination can be used experimentally to elevate plasma free fatty acid levels for metabolic studies or in certain protocols where both lipid delivery and prevention of catheter clotting are required[6][3]. The mechanism involves Intralipid supplying lipids for energy/nutrition while heparin prevents coagulation during prolonged infusions.
