Overview

Intramuscular Islet Autograft is an autologous cell therapy being developed by the University Hospital, Lille, for the management of diabetes mellitus following extensive pancreatectomy. This therapeutic approach involves the isolation of pancreatic islets from the patient's own resected pancreas, which are then transplanted into the striated muscle. Unlike the conventional intraportal transplantation into the liver, the intramuscular site is utilized to avoid the instant blood-mediated inflammatory response (IBMIR) and to provide a more accessible environment for monitoring graft function and revascularization. The goal of the autograft is to restore endogenous insulin production and maintain glycemic control, thereby preventing the complications of post-surgical diabetes.
