This is an investigational biologic therapy being developed by Semmelweis University for the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates. The treatment involves the intranasal administration of fresh, own mother's breast milk (OMM) to infants receiving therapeutic hypothermia. The rationale is based on the presence of bioactive components in breast milk, including neurotrophic growth factors (such as EGF and TGF-β), cytokines, immunoglobulins, and multipotent stem cells, which can reach the brain via the olfactory and trigeminal nerve pathways. These components are hypothesized to provide neuroprotection, modulate neuroinflammation, and foster neural repair in the damaged neonatal brain. The therapy is currently being evaluated in clinical trials such as NEO-BRIGHT to assess its impact on brain growth and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
