Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Intranasal clonazepam (JZP-323) is a benzodiazepine derivative developed as a rescue medication for the treatment of acute repetitive seizures in patients with epilepsy. It is a proprietary intranasal spray formulation of clonazepam designed to provide rapid systemic absorption and a fast onset of action during or immediately following a seizure event. As a positive allosteric modulator of the **GABA-A receptor**, it enhances the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system, effectively suppressing the hypersynchronous neuronal firing that characterizes epileptic activity. This formulation offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional rescue therapies such as rectal gels or intravenous injections, facilitating easier administration by caregivers in outpatient settings.
